RV College of Engineering (RVCE), Mysore Road
Location:
Located on Mysore Road, RV College of Engineering (RVCE) is quite far
from the centre of the city and it takes about an hour to reach the
college without traffic. However it’s easily accessible as a lot of BMTC
buses ply here. College also provides bus facility for 15,000 a year.
Almost equal numbers of students travel by BMTC and college bus.
Infrastructure:
The RV College of Engineering (RVCE) campus is huge and is also very
beautiful. There is a separate block for each department. The academic
infrastructure is top class. Labs are of course well-equipped and also
have equipment which are not usually found in any other colleges of the
city. The entire campus is Wifi enabled, which however isn't very
reliable. Library is pretty big and has a lot of books. But it needs to
enhance its collection as some of the books are not found in sufficient
numbers. Also college needs to provide better facilities for sports.
There are a couple of playgrounds (unlike many other engineering
colleges in Bangalore, where there are absolutely no grounds or open
space) but and they are not in a very good condition and students in
general aren't too happy with this factor.
Hostels for 2nd and final year are new and they’re nice. The first years hostels are average. But the 3rd
years hostels are old and in a pathetic condition. There are just 4
bathrooms between 64 students. Mess food is fine but offers no variety
to students. Hostel charges are Rs 45,000 a year including mess charges.
Fees:
For Karnataka CET students - Rs 33,000 per year.
For COMEDK students - Rs 1.25 Lakh per year.
For COMEDK students - Rs 1.25 Lakh per year.
Faculty:
Some of the faculty at RV College of Engineering (RCVE) are pretty
amazing, but they are few. Half of the faculty members are freshers who
don’t have much of an experience. Communication in class is in English
and sometimes in Kannada as well. So outsiders might face problems
understanding what they teach. Quite a few teachers are also said to be
partial to local students. Overall the faculty here are not the kind
that one expects to be at one of the top colleges in city.
Attendance & Discipline:
Attendance is a big issue in RV College of Engineering. You are
expected to have at least 85%. A 10% relaxation is given for genuine
medical reasons or for participating in extra-curricular activities. But
below 75% they’ll make you run around but below 65% you’ll have to
appear for ‘fast track semester’ – as they call it. A fast track
semester is held during vacations in between regular sems. If you fail
in Fast Track Exams too, then you'll get a back. Attendance also depends
to a great extent on which department you're talking about: chemical is
the strictest while mechanical is most lenient.
Crowd:
50% students are from various parts of Karnataka while the rest 50% are
from all parts of the country. A lot of nerdy type of crowd is to be
expected over here. As a fresher one may face some problems initially in
getting along, especially those who are not from Bangalore, but after a
sem or 2 they’ll make it fine.
Hangouts:
Not the best hangouts surround RVCE but there’s one Gopalan Mall which
is a decent place to kill time. There are also a few good place in
Rajarajeshwari Nagar else you can always go to places like MG Road,
Koramangala or Malleshwaram in the central region to find some better
options.
Canteen:
There are 2 canteens but no variety is available in either. Only the
south Indian food tastes good; north Indian food also tastes like south
Indian most of the times. Sitting space is also not enough for the
strength of students. Good part is that it’s very reasonably priced.
Festivals:
A lot of festivals happen here but ‘8th Mile’ is the biggest
among all of them. Although it's not on as large scale as some of the
more popular festivals in the city arranged by colleges which are in the
league of RVCE, it’s not bad either. It’s an annual inter-college
techno-cultural fest held in March.
Placements:
It’s the best part of this college. More than 100% placement for all
branches is guaranteed. More IT companies than the core ones visit the
campus, so CS, IS and ECE branches gets more salaries which is 4.5 – 5
lakh on an average. IBM, Wipro & Accenture are the major recruiters
for these branches. Big MNCs like Microsoft & Texas Instruments also
took a few students offering an amazing package of 10 to 12 Lakhs.
Mechanical, Civil, IM and other branches gets average 3.5 lakh package
and their major recruiters are Bosch & L&T.

College of Engineering, SRM University, Kattankulathur Campus
Location:
SRM University is located in Kattankulanthur area of Kanchipuram
District. Nearest local railway station is Potteri which is at a
walkable distance. The college is very far from the Chennai city. There
are many students travelling by their own vehicles and some of them do
use the college bus. Majority of students though use public transport.
Infrastructure:
The infra here is amazing. The campus is spread over 300 acres. Yes you
can imagine its expanse. There are 38 blocks in the campus. Even though
it is so big, it is maintained very well. There is a lake on the campus
where rowing facility is available. The classrooms are spacious and
air-conditioned. There are projector and LCDs also available during
teaching.
The hostels are very good here and consequently quiet expensive.
Students can choose the kind of rooms they want and the number of people
in a room; of course different pricing applicable.
Fees:
Fees for most undergrad courses are between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh a year
except for Aerospace & Nanotechnology for which it is Rs 350,000 a
year.
Additional books fees are also collected.
Faculty:
The faculty is experienced and well qualified. They do know their stuff
pretty well. They are open to teach those interested in learning and
really not bothered about uninterested ones. The faculty will not push
you into studying; you need to cultivate interest for the subject
yourself.
Attendance and Discipline:
Attendance norm of 75% is taken seriously. Students do bunk but
calculatedly and make sure that they don’t exceed the limit. Here there
is no restriction on the kind of attire you adorn as opposed to Anna
University affiliated colleges. Formals are not compulsory. You will a
see a striking change in the ambience and overall feel of the campus
here compared to other Chennai colleges.
Crowd:
You can see from the fees that only kids from well to do families come
to SRM. There are many North Indians here, almost half the batch
comprises of them. It isn’t surprising to find students here wearing
expensive brands or carrying expensive gadgets. You don’t really find
many studious people here as most of the students are fun loving.
Canteen:
The whole campus has around 20 canteens. Yes it isn’t a mistake, it is
20! Techpark (CS & IT departments) seems to have one of the best
canteens. There is also a food court where you will find a lot of
options and it is always crowded. You will find almost all cuisine foods
here.
Festivals:
'Milan' is the main cultural festival held in the month of January.
'Aarush' is the inter-college fest for all the colleges under the SRM
University. These are quite a big festival and you see a good
participation from students of SRM and other colleges too.
Placements:
Placements are very good here. The college does have good record for
placements and claiming 100% for some batches. The average package got
by students here is around 3- 4 Lakh per annum. Few of the students do
manage to bag bigger and very high paying offers too.

Verdict:
SRM University is one of the best private universities in Chennai. If
cosmopolitan crowd, an air of freedom and good overall development is
what you are looking at, then SRM should be your call. However fees and
locations might be deterrents.
National Institute of Technology Karnataka , Surathkal (NITK)
Introduction:
Started in 1960, NIT-Surathkal was originally the Regional Engineering
College (REC) of the state. In the year 2002, it was christened National
Institute of Technology - Karnataka and was also given the status of an
Institute of National Importance. Rightly so, it seems, because NITK
has quickly moved up the ranks and is widely regarded as being among the
top ten engineering colleges of India. It is also currently mentoring
NIT-Goa, which is pretty cool, if you ask us.
Location:
Though the name Surathkal may not be terribly appealing, students swear
by the location of NITK. Surathkal is a tiny place, just off National
Highway 17, and is probably known mainly because of the college. Anyway,
NITK is right on the coastline, and even has a private beach all to
itself. Also, the lovely city of Mangalore is just 25 kilometres away.
Its not SO perfect though - the weather isn't too great; there are just
two seasons- 7 months of summer and 5 months of torrential rain.
Infrastructure:
It's really good, actually. Four years ago, yes, the college looked
like it was in urgent need of a makeover. And that's exactly what it
got; a crazy spree of construction activity has completely transformed
the entire look of NITK. Three new Mega-hostels, each housing 550 boys,
with excellent single rooms and facilities have quickly come up, and a
few more are under construction. All the laboratories are brand new and
fully functional, with the latest equipments. The library, although not
air conditioned, is well ventilated and always has more books than you
can ask for. The college also has really good facilities for sports,
with a number of courts and grounds for different sports, and an
Olympic-size swimming pool as well. The main building and the hostels
are wifi enabled. The only complaint students have is with the scarcity
of water coolers in the campus, but they say that that's improving too.
Rankings:
NIT-Surathkal has regularly been voted the best among all NITs in the
country. Obviously, that means that you need to be, well, among the
toppers in AIEEE if you want to stand a chance of getting in.
Faculty:
Most students are full of good things to say about the professors, who
are said to be very friendly and extremely approachable. The Mechanical
department faculty is singled out for special praise, while students say
that the CS and IT branches are slightly short of experienced faculty
members. The good part is that none of the professors have big ego
problems, and most share a good rapport with students.
Attendance:
This is where things can get tricky. All NITs have a 75 percent
attendance rule, though there are a few where it's slightly relaxed. Not
at NITK, though. Almost all the professors are very particular about
attendance (there are a few exceptions of course, but you never know
when they might change their minds). If you fall short of attendance,
warnings are given. But if you still fail to pull up your socks, you can
expect to flunk the subject. They even have a term for it - FA grade
(Failed because of Attendance). Yikes!
Crowd:
Since it's an NIT (and arguably the topmost NIT), you can't really
expect to find supermodels here. But it's not too bad either. Yes, the
girl/boy ratio is a frighteningly poor 1:9, but NITK isn't 'unliveable'.
There's an okay mix of the extremely nerdy and the uber cool, the
sports fanatics and the useless junkies. We find it just slightly hard
to believe, but students assure us that there's something for everyone
here.
Festivals:
The technical festival, Engineer is held in October, while the cultural
fest Incident is held sometime in February. While they certainly don't
have the most innovative of names, both festivals are extremely popular
and receive wild participation from across the country. Another festival
called Crescendo is an intra-college fest held in March, is also quite
popular.
Placements:
Well, the placements are really, really good, and they just seem to go
on improving year on year. The average salary is between 7 and 8 lpa,
which is fantastic, of course. The top companies from most
engineering-related (and sometimes even other) sectors are regular
recruiters at NITK. To give you a gist of what you can expect, Facebook
recently picked up a few students for a California based profile, and
will be paying them a whopping 52lpa (when converted to rupees,
obviously, but it's still bonkers, isn't it?!). Google and Microsoft
have been visiting the campus for the past few years as well, and
picking a handful of brilliant students at mind boggling salaries. Wow!

Verdict:
If you get into NIT-Surathkal, you don't think - you just go. One of the finest technical institutes in India, it's so good that it's probably a shade better than some of the newerIndian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras)
Foreword:
The Indian Institute of Technology,
Madras, is among the foremost institutes of national importance in
higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the
German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an
institute of higher education in engineering in India, which turned out
to be the story behind the birth of IIT Madras. In spite of the city
being renamed Chennai, the old name still holds a special place in the
hearts of staff, alumni, and current students as well. Helped hugely by
its location in one of the metros, IIT-Madras is definitely one of the
most prestigious institutes in the country.
Location:
The IIT Madras campus is located in a
lovely campus in one of the more posh localities of Chennai, although
once you enter, it seems like a more or less self sufficient mini-city
anyway.
Campus and Infrastructure:
The institute is built on a lovely
campus which stretches over a few hundred acres. Students have unlimited
freedom to roam around anywhere and anytime inside or outside the
campus. Except that boys aren’t allowed into the girls hostels, of
course.
Although it’s a pretty old campus, most
of the laboratories, almost all the computer labs even in the hostels,
and the central library are airconditioned. Hostels aren’t, naturally,
and it can get pretty hot in the summer months (which last for almost
the entire year), but fortunately there’s enough greenery around to keep
soaring temperatures in check.
There are 17 hostels in all, which are
designed in such a way that people are given a chance to socialize and
organize various functions at the popular ‘quadrangles’.
Courses Offered:
Faculty:
The professors here are very interactive
and enthusiastic about the subjects they teach, and of course highly
experienced. Most have a minimum of a PhD degree from an IIT or some
other premier institute in the world.
The Dean shares an excellent rapport
with the students, who are equivocal in their praise for him and say
that he’s one of the best professors the institute has ever had.
Crowd:
IIT Madras, like most other engineering
institutes, has a frankly awful Boy/Girl ratio, about 6/1, that too if
you’re lucky. The crowd, as you’d expect at a renowned institute, is
pretty multicultural, coming from many parts of the country.
On an average, classes take up about 24
hours of every week, with saturdays and sundays being holidays. Late
night chats with friends, and hanging out in the CCD located inside the
campus are the most common pastimes every weekend. There’s a million
things to pursue, provided you find the time and provided you’re able to
handle your rigorous academic schedule side by side.
At one point of time, most IITs were
notorious for their ragging-activities, but with the introduction of
strict Anti-Ragging laws, you hardly see anything major at IIT Madras,
though something or another does pop up once in a while.
Rankings:
IIT Madras ranks 4th among all the engineering colleges in India, and this list includes all colleges – government or private.
To get in, you need to have a rank of 6000 or below in the IIT-JEE, the higher the better. The best courses close much much higher.
To get in, you need to have a rank of 6000 or below in the IIT-JEE, the higher the better. The best courses close much much higher.
Placements and Internships:
The placements in every IIT are good,
and since Madras is one of the top few, they’re brilliant to say the
least. Internships can vary from core interns to finance interns. The
average salary packages are really high – even more than what an average
MBA can expect.
Festivals and Activities:
The major festivals/organisations are:
'Shaastra': Technical festival of IIT Madras and
'Saarang': Cultural festival of IIT Madras
IIT Madras also has an excellent e-cell called C-TIDES, which a host of students join.

Canteen/Mess/Other Hangouts:
80% of the boys dine at the huge
3-floored Mega mess known as 'Himalaya', while the remaining at the
other dining arrangements near their respective hostels. The girls dine
at the 'Vindhya' mess. While the food isn’t really out of the world,
it’s more or less edible, which is more than what some colleges offer.
The Ascendas I.T park, being very near
to the boys hostel, is the most common hang-out place for the students.
It has a huge food court which houses restaurants like McDonalds, KFC,
Subway, Pizza Hut, etc.; other than this the nearby places would be
Dominos pizza, Wang's kitchen, etc.

Apart from housing one of the most
sought after institutions in India, the self-contained campus is also a
great place to be in. Located in a beautiful wooded land in Chennai, IIT
Madras promises four unforgettable years.
